In 2018, many young people have opted to stray away from religious practice and it’s age-old traditions.

However, that isn’t the case for Melanie Summers who has committed something significant to Lent this year.

Lent is an annual religious observance, where many Christians across the globe sacrifice, or give up things to replicate Jesus Christ’s 40 day journey into the desert.

The local commerce student at Betoota’s Notre Dame Campus, sat down with The Advocate to take us through her sacrifice.

“Yeah I have decided to go without telling anyone that Notre Dame is just like any other university for the whole 40 day period of Lent,” Summers said.

“It’s going to be so hard, but that’s what Lent is about. It’s about observing the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us, so I am happy to commit to not explaining to anyone why Notre Dame is just as reputable as any other tertiary institution.”

“It only frustrates me that people don’t believe me,” explained the Pymblewood Alumni from the Betoota Ponds.

“Like so what, I couldn’t get into the Polytechnic or any of the uni’s in Brisbane, Adelaide or Sydney, I would actually say Notre Dame provides a more wholesome education I would say.”

Ashley Johnson, a school friend of Summers, told us that she won’t be holding her breath for the sacrifice.

“Poor Mel, no one really gives a fuck that she has gone to Notre Dame. Yeah, she fucked up her later school years because she was a rebel without a cause, but whatever, good on her for giving it a crack anyway. It’s just we are just all sick of hearing about it, to be honest,” said Johnson.
