COMEDIAN CARL BARRON HAS taken out the 17th annual Paul Kelly look-a-like contest in Hobart this afternoon, after nearly a decade of entering the competition.
While travelling around Australia, Paul Kelly made his first public performance in 1974 in Hobart.
He sang a few Bob Dylan numbers in a small Salamanca Place folk club – and the rest they say, is history. First held in 1990, the Paul Kelly look-a-like competition has attracted some big name’s in world music, from American disk jockey Moby, to Coldplay drummer Will Champion.
Speaking to The Advocate this afternoon, the Longreach-native said he was “stoked” to get the gong.
“What a day, aye?” said Barron.
“Blokes ask me if I’m Paul Kelly all the time, then they get disappointed when I say ‘Nah, I’m Carl Baron, but.’ It’s a pissa. Guess I got one back on the nude-nut. People say he’s the Australian Bob Dylan… If that’s true, I’m the Aussie Jim Jeffries,”
“Nah but yeah, mate. Top competition, top result. I’m going to suck on James Boags until I’m on the verge of respiratory failure tonight. Shit’s gunna be cash.” said Barron.
The singer-songwriter at the centre of the contest is said to be wrapped with the result, saying that Carl Barron deserved to win after trying for so long.
“Yeah, it’s nice.”
