Though local woman Emily Rodgers has been doing her tax for roughly several years now, she still has the sinking feeling she’s inadvertently committed tax fraud.
Like most millennials, Emily was never taught any life skills in high school and had been left to navigate the adult world through trial and error – because apparently knowing Pythagoras theorem is more important than knowing what pro-rata is or how to fill out a tax form.
To make matters worse, Emily is also one of many Australians who received a strange tax estimate, that said she owed thousands of dollars to the government.
She speaks to our reporter, who too lives in constant fear of receiving a message from My Gov.
“I honestly don’t know if I’ve committed tax fraud or not”, says Emily.
“I don’t know what I’m doing.”
“Why is my medicare levy so high? I’m poor as fuck.”
“What is capital gains?”
“I made money on Ripple, do I have to report that?”
Recalibrating her form to include the Jobseeker payment and profit from Coinspot, Emily’s face visibly pales when she realises the amount owing is not a mistake after all.
“Well, fuck.”
“I’m going to have to sell my eggs.”
More to come.
