Despite the fact that they are both adherents to the same pentecostal denomination, The Nightwatchman is yet to show any form of support or condemnation for controversial Australian rugby star Israel Folau.
This comes as the 30-year-old sporting superstar is doing his best to fuck up both his career and Australia’s world cup chances in the most crucial part of the rugby season.
Last Wednesday, the religiously-motivated Folau posted: “Warning. Drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists, idolators. Hell awaits you. Repent! Only Jesus saves.”
While some would argue remaining indifferent to Folau’s offensively extreme Christian rhetoric is typical of the conservative Coalition, it seems that not saying anything is also viewed as cowardly from the footballers end.
Folau, who first came to light as an incredibly talented Brisbane Bronco and Maroons player in the NRL – before making a poorly-thought out switch to the AFL for two seasons, before inevitably transitioning into rugby union – has proven that he’s not just a pretty face, but also someone who might be suffering from CTE after 15 years playing high level contact sport across three-codes.
However, the Australian coalition government, who were behind one of the biggest ‘NO to gay marriage’ campaigns in the history of civil rights – appear to be suspiciously quiet when it comes to backing up the Aussie footballer.
When asked about whether he will be vocally supporting Folau’s freedom to religious beliefs, Prime Minister Morrison says it’s not that black and white.
“Where was this bloke two years ago?” said the Nightwatchman.
“Really could have used a young Polynesian footy star on the Christian side. Instead it was just a bunch of leathery old white guys”
When asked if he agreed with his comments, Prime Minister Morrison again said it’s not that black and white.
“I agreed with some of it. But his comments about liars, drunkards and thieves was just too far. It was offensive and unnecessary”
“I think I speak for both sides of politics when I say Israel Folau is completely out of line!”
