A family-friendly Halloween party in Betoota Heights was able to go without any drama over the weekend, after a group of mates debuted their much-hyped Cool Runnings costumes without the use of any body paint.
Party host, Kel Coorey (31) says she had actually meant to send the boys a message, reminding them that she doesn’t think dressing up in minstrel-style blackface is very appropriate.
“I forgot. I was too busy putting up the fake cob webs” she said.
“I know these boys don’t spend much time reading the news, so I was worried they might have missed that episode of Red Faces with Harry Connick Jnr”
Luckily for Kel, and everyone else who wanted to take photos of the evening, this particular group of suburban larrikins didn’t feel they really needed to emphasis the dark-skinned features of the 1988 Jamaican Olympic bob sled team.
Boydy, Mal, Petey and Clacker, all white late-20s men, told reporters that they were confident they could create enough interest in their group costume with the two metre paper mache bob sled. And felt everyone kind of knew what they were going for without painting their skin black with acrylic paint.
“We spent like a month on this fucking thing” said Boydy.
“There was no way we were risking not being able to put it on Facebook”
“Plus, as a every day bloke, I don’t really think someone’s skin colour should be used as a costume”
While the boys were congratulated for their extra effort, unfortunately their costumes were overshadowed by their 150 kilogram Samoan mate Kimbo, who donned a top knot and mawashi belt in his spectacular sumo outfit.
Kimbo was reprimanded several times throughout the evening for his oriental-themed accent.
