With just six days until the 2019 Federal Election, one local swing-voter feels it might be time to re-elect another Labor government.
Trenton Pedrana (40) says as the sole bread-winner of an comfortable middle class family of four in 2019, he hasn’t once turned on free-to-air television since last year’s State Of Origin.
That means, aside from seeing the consistent stream of vague campaign billboards for Clive Palmer on his commute to and from work, Trenton hasn’t been engaging with any election campaigns for the major parties.
“I don’t even know who the leaders are [haha]” says Trenton.
“My kids are too young to vote and my wife and I don’t really care. We can’t ever remember politics directly affecting my life”
“Well, not since 2009”
Trenton is of course referring to former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s $42 billion stimulus package, which was announced in February 2009 – in an effort to ride out the wake of the GFC.
It consisted of an infrastructure program worth $26 billion, $2.7 billion in small business tax breaks, and $12.7 billion for cash bonuses, including $950 for every Australian taxpayer who earned less than $80,000 during the 2007-8 financial year.
Kev’s Nine Fitty – as it became known as – saw a huge increase in profits for Foxtel packages, pub owners, tyre shops, drug dealers and most notably, electronics retailers.
“I bought a brand spanking new curved plasma [haha]” says Trenton.
“Kids loved it”
“And a few treats for the wife”
However, with the misso’s Camilla kaftan now faded to the point where it can only be used as maternity wear – and the plasma TV freezing for the final time over the weekend. Trenton thinks it might be time to vote in Bill.
“That’s his name isn’t it? [haha]”
“Need a new TV” he says.
“One that doesn’t shit itself when I download Netflix, Stan and Kayo”
