Having never studied history due to lack of time between extension English and Drama, I have not really known just how out of touch the leaders of the past have been.
After a bit of digging it turns out it’s way worse than I thought, with some of the tyrants of the past being arguably worse for the poor than the Liberal government.
To quote aspiring centrist Joe Hildebrand “History, in short, is not a very nice place.”
Inspired by Hildebrand’s quest to share knowledge with the uneducated masses, I conducted some in-depth research on Wikipedia and have found disturbing details of a historical figure who may not be all he is cracked up to be.
Here’s why King Henry VIII might be problematic.
Now, if you’re a normal person like me, you’ve probably never heard of this guy before.
To give you a brief rundown, Henry VIII was king of England, the second monarch and an old white man who was privileged AF!
Most notably, Henry VIII was married six times which is amazing considering they didn’t even have Tinder back then.
However, don’t for one second think that King Henry VIII many wives means he was some sort of gallant gentleman. On the contrary, he had two of his wives executed for failing to give birth to a son!
This is problematic because:
- You should already know this guys but it is never, ever, OK for you to murder someone. Ever.
- Not wanting to have a daughter reinforces the idea that women are not equal, especially during an era where they could not own land.
Some of you might be thinking, “hang on Jamie, cool your hot rod, didn’t he divorce two of them?”
Yes, he did and he started his own church in order to do so.
The church he founded you ask? None other than The Church of England who went on to donate one million dollars to the No Campaign during the marriage equality plebiscite.
What. A. Cunt.
Even in 2019, we are still feeling the effects of this guy’s patriarchy monarchy malarky which is why King Henry VII might be problematic.
