Newstead-based finance worker Wilston Windsor-Ascot (27) is currently preparing himself a dope night with the big steppers.
That’s because there’s a Kendrick Lamar concert taking place in the iconic Brisbane Entertainment Centre, a cool 30 kilometres from the CBD – and roughly 45 minutes drive peak hour. Wilston ain’t gonna miss this.
“I don’t usually play up on school nights” says he says.
“But I’m willing to put it all on the line for Kung Fu Kenny. It’s gonna be lit”
“Haha”
With two nights in Sydney, two in Melbourne – and the rare Perth visit for the lesser known city of 2 million people in Western Australia – the multi-platinum, Grammy-award winning hip hop artist, Kendrick Lamar is back in Queensland.
It’s his third time in Brisbane, and the iconic Los Angeles wordsmith has achieved massive critical and cultural success since his debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city released in 2012.
It’s a momentous occasion for river city, and one that might see Wilston taking an early mark from work to put away a few Seltzers at Fridays Riverside – before catching an Uber black north with Hugo, Angus and the fellas.
“I’m stoked” says the 4th-generation Brisbane white collar, who may just be the human embodiment of whiteness.
“I haven’t seen him since he came to Splendour before the pandemic. That was back in my Hawaiian shirt festival bro days haha”
“I actually discovered him there. I only went to Splendour in 2018 to see Angus and Julia and the Dunies.
“But yeah. I’ve heard his new stuff is a bit different. In a good way. Less political, more about the music”
“Which is a relief”
