Returning for its ninth season, the early episodes on Channel 9’s The Voice are known for their euphoric highs and tragic lows, as well a rare insight into the trials and tribulations of their contestants.
In last night’s episode, one particularly heartbreaking moment reduced all four judges to tears.
43-year-old aspiring rock singer, Will Kennedy arrived to his audition with a tragic story of loss – one that was evident through the pain in his vocals.
Kennedy, a part-time automart sales rep achieved the golden ticket to temporary reality TV stardom, both Delta Goodrem, Kelly Rowland, Boy George and Guy spun around not even six lyrics into his stirring rendition of Pearl Jam’s ‘Last Kiss’.
After a ten minute standing ovation, Kennedy was then quizzed as to what happened in his life that made for such a genuine sound of sadness in his 1990’s grunge-style crooning vocals.
“Breathtaking” said Delta.
“I really want you on my team. Your pain sounds so real. It’s something I reckon I can work with”
Boy George went one further and asked where the pain comes from.
“About two years ago now, I was pulling out of Dan Murphy’s in Wynnum, when I got caught up perving on some younger women outside the maccas”
“I didn’t see it. But I heard it” he said holding back tears.
Will’s entire world changed that afternoon, as he backed his Ford sedan into the tow bar of a liquor delivery truck.
“That’s why I sang this song. It’s a story of loss”
While Mr Kennedy didn’t actually write off his 2000 model Falcon, he says it was never the same again.
“You just can’t find the write panel beaters nowadays. The dent is still so obvious”
Former Destiny’s Child member, Kelly Rowland, says it’s a story that really makes you appreciate your loved ones and comprehensive car insurance.
“Heaven forbid that happened to me”
“I am a big fan of the AU Falcon”
“I just worry if I ever had one I would also have to risk the same tragedy that William here has known”
Will, who claims to be a big fan of 1990’s era Batman movies, opted to join Guy’s team.
