A Londoner Down Under who’s found himself a nice group of Australian friends to hang out with is today bearing the brunt of their renewed interest in One Day Cricket after their victory over India over the weekend.
George Clockhouse, a 27-year-old Englishman who does something in a French Quarter office with a computer in return for Australian dollars, said his friends here have made it clear to him that The Ashes are largely irrelevant this year because it is also an ODI World Cup year.
And, George says, they’re under the impression that the Australians are in with a chance of clinching their 6th world title.
“They’ve told me The Ashes don’t matter this year because it’s a World Cup year,” he said.
“Which is pathetic. Even if they do win the World Cup, it’ll come just weeks before Jimmy Anderson puts them to the sword with the Dukes,”
“What’s next? They’ll tell me that the Wallabies are going to win the World Cup in Japan? I wish they’d just give it a rest. It’s the same old joke, repeated a hundred times over but those idiots keep laughing.”
George gave us the contact details of his group chat’s admin, who was able to back up his version of events.
Dennis Spearman befriended Mr Clockhouse after he arrived in Betoota to escape a vehicluar manslaughter charge back home in the UK.
Since then, the pair and Spearman’s immediate friendship group have been inseparable.
“George is OK for a Pom,” he laughed.
“Pity he’s going to have to watch us win the Cricket World Cup this year. Who cares about The Ashes, anyway? Snooze. I probably won’t even get up to watch them. Or stay up? [laughs] See, I don’t even know when they’re on!”
“Should be good anyway.”
More to come.
