Members of a small coastal town council have reportedly convened for an emergency late-night meeting.
The mayor, Mr Thompson, had called the meeting to address the concerning tourism numbers, which had continued to take a nosedive despite the introduction of a Christian Rock music festival.
Weary and fresh out of ideas, Mayor Thompson decided it was time for a brainstorming session.
“We were getting pretty desperate,” admits the Mayor.
“When you don’t have any funds it’s hard to find ways to make a town interesting.”
“We could always go down the Big Pineapple or Big Banana route but even that wouldn’t give it a big enough boost.”
Thompson says council members had few good ideas to offer, and that most of the meeting was spent discussing the merits of a potential red light district.
However, as the night continued, and the council members got stuck into some expired VB’s, the topic of conversation soon took a turn to something a little darker – murder.
“It started off as a joke at first, as most things do,” whispered Mayor Thompson, “someone mentioned how murders can boost a town’s recognition and the conversation just really took off.”
The council held a town hall meeting with residents the next day, where they tested the waters with some casual references to murder over some chip and dip.
When the residents remained undecided, Mayor Thompson said he’d reminded them of the popularity of true crime shows.
“That’d be the ideal outcome, I think,” says Mayor Thompson.
“To get on one of those Serial podcasts.”
The mayor then went on to reassure residents that if someone were to ‘hypothetically’ murder anyone, it’d likely be a vagrant, and not a local.
As the townspeople began to slowly warm to the idea, Thompson says he finished with a bible quote about teamwork, pausing heavily to eye members of the audience that looked even the slightest bit sinister.
“I think finding the right person to do it will be the hard part,” sighs Thompson.
“I’ve put the feelers out to see if anyone fits the bill, but it’s such a close knit community. I just can’t imagine anyone being capable of murder.”
