If this stupid fucken Omicron variant wasn’t enough to ruin the holidays, hundreds of Queenslander have had to leave their homes overnight amidst the ongoing flood crisis caused by rainfall records across the state.
While Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk toys with the idea of another sensationalist border closure just in time to ruin the Christmas reunions of millions of families seperated by two years worth of pandemic points-scoring, it seems now Mother Nature wants to get in on the disaster that is 2021.
The main street of the Darling Downs agricultural hub of Inglewood was completely underwater this morning, after the Macintyre Brook burst its banks at 11.15 metres – shattering a previous 1988 water level record of 10.5m.
Elsewhere in the state, residents are being told to prepare for a 2010 sized big wet. A number of suburbs on the Goldie are watching major flood warnings, with more rain expected today. Heavy falls are tipped to batter the Queensland coast north to Townsville until lunchtimes, and more than 200 roads have been closed across the state.
With worse damage expected to come from this unwelcome atmospheric phenomenon known as La Niña, the media are now well beyond reporting on how badly this extreme weather pattern has fucked over our farmers – and are now more focused on the evacuations of suburbs and towns.
With December now officially upon us, and holiday plans riding on whatever side of the bed the State Government woke up on today, Queenslanders can at least look forward to being told how fucking resilient they are for the next couple of weeks.
Palaszczuk is expected to host a press conference in the next couple hours where she will inform the state of how much water is currently being drained out of the main streets of South-West Queensland by community volunteers armed with the Rotary trash pump.
But not before she tells us all that, while she doesn’t know how bad these floods will get, one thing she does know is how fucking resilient Queenslanders are.
And when the going gets tough, Queenslander get going. Because of how resilient we are.
And also, she can’t comment yet if you can visit your nan in Tenterfield on Christmas Day, because she’s going to wait a week before Christmas to make that call. But stay resilient. Because that’s what Queenslanders are. Resilient.
