The Bureau of Meteorology yesterday raised eyebrows by randomly insisting that they no longer wish to go by the acronym ‘BOM’, which is a rebranding decision that cost them a staggering $70K with the aid of ‘communication consultants’- though it’s likely not the agencies fault that a bunch of suits at a government organisation decided they needed to be taken more ‘seriously’, and were filling to fork out a dumb amount of money for something so trivial.
In what can only be described as BOM’s ‘Snoop Lion phase’, which refers to when Snoop Dogg decided to go by the name of a different animal in 2013, the Bureau of Meteorology released a statement urging everyone to refer to them as ‘The Bureau.’ A word that not only can most people not spell, but makes it sound like some kind of spy network and not an organisation that provides weather updates.
On top of not changing the website URL or app name, BOM’s half hearted attempt at changing their name also shows they know absolutely nothing about Australian nickname culture, which has always shown that once you’ve been given one, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it – nor can you try and come up with your own nickname, as everyone else will just double down.
It’s alleged even Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek says she does not “quite understand” the reasons behind the rebranding exercise, especially seeing as it occurred during a time of severe weather and flood disaster.
More to come.
