As dam levels continue to fall, the nation’s residents are about to experience tough new water rules, with Level 3 restrictions set to come into effect if no meaningful rain falls before the end of January.
These include a 3-sip limit from bubblers, a $25 levy on each bag of servo ice, and a controversial new ruling that only one shower per household is to be used each day.
During this “communal” shower, all family members, and pets if required, are to share the shower water for a period of no more than 3 minutes. Any households found to be exceeding the strict time limit would have their water mains shut off for a period of 90 days, although they would be provided with a voucher for a packet of baby wipes.
Minister for Water Resources, David Littleproud said whilst the experience may be awkward at first, he was sure that the public would quickly become used to the new restrictions.
“Sure, squeezing into a shower with your naked family seems weird now, but that’s only because it’s not the status quo yet. This system was actually used in Tasmania in the mid-90s and it was really surprising how quickly the locals embraced the new rules”.
