Arriving at Flemington Racecourse this morning Bella Anderson’s car was swamped by anti-horse racing protesters, all holding signs with vicious slogans designed to make racegoers feel guilty.
Although the protester’s signs did make Bella feel something, she reveals to The Advocate that it’s probably not the emotion they were hoping for.
“Is being surprised an emotion?”
“I was surprised by how little they affected me”
“If anything, I might have felt pity?”
“I mean, good on them for standing up for what they believe in, but don’t get in the way of me having a good time and meeting potential clients willing to pay for me to go on a holiday”
Bella goes on to say that she’s been going to the Spring Carnival for about four years now, and each year she becomes more and more desensitised to the protesters.
She explained that this year, as a client ferried her in via a private car, she barely even noticed them at all.
“Most punters just see them as a roadblock and factor in an extra 10 minutes to their Uber drive”
She continues by drawing some interesting comparisons, saying what it might be like if the roles were reversed.
“You don’t see me standing outside their house in the morning holding signs in protest of the hideous hemp clothes they’re wearing, do you?”
