The new rooftop wine bar that just opened on the top floor of Bedourie’s old St George Bank, has opened to much fanfare over the weekend.
Now known as The Sandstone Dragon, The venue comes complete with a chandellier, marble bar that lights up and a lift.
Bedourie is located in the Channel Country of Central West Queensland, Australia, lying on Eyre Creek. It is located 1,600 kilometres west of the state capital, Brisbane, and 200 kilometres north of Birdsville.
Bedourie is more commonly known as the administrative centre of the Diamantina Shire. However, when the Georgina River experiences severe floods the town can be cut off by road for months at a time, meaning it has never seen the same growth and urban sprawl as nearby Betoota.
It is due to the town’s slower country town pace that it has not yet earned itself the title of agricultural epicentre, or even that of rural hub.
However, all of that is about to change, ever since the grand opening of The Sandstone Dragon.
While the town is definitely big enough to entertain the idea of a population influx of decentralising cityfolk, it is also small enough to go ‘cute’ – which is why a rooftop bar is such an important inclusion for this town.
“Our town just went from Mt Isa to Maleny overnight” said the bar owner, Gil Hoorey.
“Now all we gotta do is go from weathered to rustic”
