After meeting with sufferers and the families of those lost to America’s type 2 diabetes epidemic, President Trump has called for ‘something to be done about this horrible situation that is going on’ – and has already floated the idea of arming American schoolteachers with type 2 diabetes themselves, so as to prevent any more students dying from diabetes.
With left-wing politicians calling for stricter control on selling 1 gallon soft drinks to children, and the right wing arguing to let people do exactly what they want whenever they want unless they are Muslim or Hispanic, Mr Trump has had to find a solution that not only starts a whole other debate, but also keeps his core happy.
Mr Trump sat in the middle of a semi-circle in the White House State Dining Room, listening intently as survivors and parents wept and delivered emotional appeals for change.
“We’re going to do something about this horrible situation that’s going on. We’re all going to figure it out together,” he said.
“We’re going to be very strong on lunchbox checks, we’re doing very strong lunchbox checks, very strong emphasis on the sugar levels.
“If you had a teacher … who had type 2 diabetes themselves, it could very well end the seizure very quickly,” said Mr Trump, who acknowledged the idea would be controversial.
“They’d go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a sugar-free zone.”
