In some lighter news, golden crumpets have been revealed to be the best base for our national spread.
The Australian Institution of Food Science and Technology (AIFST) is said to have conducted a nationwide survey and received thousands of results, ranging from humble white bread to stranger combinations, such as the sweet and savoury combo of arrowroot biscuits.
Chatting to head researcher David Hudson, golden crumpets or ‘muffins’ as some strange people call them, came out unanimously on top.
“There’s just something about vegemite on toasted crumpets that hits different”, says David, “especially if you pop on some melted cheese.”
“I mean yeah, sourdough is up there, but the sponginess of crumpets just takes it to that next level.”
However, despite this being seen as the superior combination, David says it’s often used as a ‘treat’ instead of a regular appearance.
“Yeah it’s a bit of a strange one, but people seem more inclined to regularly pop it on cruskits or bread.”
“I reckon it’s because crumpets are so good, it’s almost too hedonistic to indulge in often.”
“You don’t want to spoil your palate.”
More to come.
