US President Joe Biden has used some of cricketing legend Merv Hughes’ star power today in announcing his government is looking to reform some legislation surrounding Native American-owned casinos and hospitality venues.
The barnstorming Victorian was invited to Washington DC by Biden because of his deep love and respect for the American people and his somewhat deep knowledge of being inside a casino.
President Biden and Mr Hughes shook hands and embraced before introducing the former quick.
“Merv Hughes is a friend to the American people,” said Mr Biden.
“He’s well-known and commands a deep respect from all Americans. From Cape Cod To Santa Monica, there’s not many people who don’t know, his, uh, candour and gentlemanly politeness that is innate within all Australians. Merv is also a great friend to the Native Americans. He knows their story well and, uh, here he is. He’s going to say a few words now.”
Merv cleared his throat at moved to the microphone.
“I’m here in your country, whatever you need from me, just let me know,” he said.
“We all know Merv Hughes loves America.”
Mr Hughes then apologised for referring to himself in the third person.
President Biden provided handclaps as Merv stepped back from the podium, where they moved to the side to exchange sporting memoriabilia.
