After copping some major backlash on the Twittersphere for making the seventh episode almost impossible to see, House Of The Dragon director Miguel Sapochnik admits he may have taken his creative licence a little bit too far, but not before trying to defend his weird stylistic choices.
For those who don’t know Sapochnik, he was also the mastermind behind the Game of Thrones episode ‘The Long Night’, which was so dark, viewers were unaware of where the episode started and the end credits began.
This ‘intentional creative decision’ has been lambasted by fans, with many stating that all they could see in the latest episode of HotD was ‘the eerie glow of floating wigs.’
But after having a quick chat with Sapochnik, The Advocate has since learned this attempt at curating an intense, intimate atmosphere at the expense of the audience’s eyeballs was actually inspired by Sapochnik’s ‘night of horror’, when he’d accidentally locked himself in his laundry cupboard.
With his phone slowly dying and the claustrophobia setting in, Sapochnik says all he could see was the eerie glow of his mop heads, which he says began to take on a ‘human like form’ the longer he was trapped in the cupboard.
“It was a terrifying experience” says Sapochnik, “I’m fairly certain I drifted in and out of psychosis.”
“But what scares you, should inspire you.”
