Many of my aspirational finance students want to turbocharge their career progression but forget to use the most important business tool to do so. Leverage.

Using leverage is key to attaining more professional success, promotions, more leisure time and better health. It is a wonderful tool to have in your professional arsenal but more importantly it’s a tool you’ve got to remember to use when the opportunity arises.

Like at your next office staff party. So many opportunities to use leverage will present themselves as your inebriated colleagues drop their professional masks and let their inhibitions shine.

If there’s a promotion out there that you desperately want but know you have absolutely zero chance of getting because you simply don’t deserve it, consider how having leverage over your boss can change that situation.

As you watch your boss sink their 8th tequila slammer and rip off their shirt before proceeding to get all Coyote Ugly on top of the bar, take photos. Take videos. Store them on your phone and let the good times continue to roll.

As your boss who is also kind of a friend but only because they’re valuable to your career progression starts to allow colleagues to do shots out of their belly button before smacking a big ol’ wet kiss on the ever so patient barman watching on, turn on your phone’s audio recorder and let it record all the hilarious shit your boss is slurring out of their drunken hot mess of a mouth.

Come Monday, take your boss out for coffee. Even buy them one to soften the upcoming blow of blackmail. ‘Do you remember much from Friday night?’ you’ll ask with a sly grin. ‘I lost all memory after that 2nd Tequila slammer’ they’ll sheepishly respond with a hint of embarrassment.

‘Don’t worry about remembering’ you’ll say as you send the audio, images and videos of their drunken mistakes to them. ‘I’ve recorded it all so you don’t have to’.

As your boss realises the leverage you have over them, calmly explain the lengths you’ll go to in order to ruin their career by releasing these recordings via the all staff email, their socials and even their LinkedIn profile.

And don’t forget to demand a hefty pay rise with that promotion.
