Local bloke Pete Hughes has today realised he has a lot in common with the mythological king of Ephyra, ‘Sisyphus’, who was doomed to a cruel and unusual form of punishment for eternity.
A known trickster, Sisyphus had attempted to cheat death not once but twice, earning himself the ire of the king of the underworld, Hades, who sought to punish him for his misdeeds.
Leaving no stone unturned when it came to creating a creative punishment fit for Sisyphus’s crimes, Hades had forced him to roll up an enchanted boulder up a steep hill, which would roll back down just before it reached the top – i.e. the Greek version of edging.
Doomed to an eternity of neverending frustration, Sisyphus has become somewhat of an allegory on the absurdity that is life, highlighting a nihilistic philosophy that suggests the universe serves no purpose, no matter how much human beings search for meaning.
Though markedly a lot less chiselled than his fabled counterpart, Pete, too, has found himself in a Sisyphean like cycle of putting clothes on the end of his bed and kicking them off when he goes to sleep, which he’s done so as long as he could remember.
Too dirty for the drawer but not dirty enough for the floor, Pete’s clothes could also be considered a metaphor for being in limbo, doomed to remain in an undecided state for the rest of time…or until Pete gets a girlfriend and has to clean his act up.
More to come.
