A Betoota Heights man has shrugged off accusations that he takes making hot chips at home a bit too seriously, telling The Advocate that there’s a method to his so-called madness.
One-by-one, Green Road electrician Kasey Steele turns his chips over on the baking dish as per the instructions on the bag.
He says you don’t need anything fancy, like an air fryer or your own deep fryer, to enjoy a quality chip at home.
The Advocate was invited inside the man’s home for a demonstration, something along the lines of a chip-style Ready Steady Cook, as he put it.
“We’re not splitting an atom here,” said the 26-year-old.
“You just lay them out on a baking dish, a single layer. You have and double ups and they’ll either be stuck together or floppy as a disk from 1992. You don’t want that,”
“They let you know all this on the back. It literally tells you how to do it.”
Mr Steele ripped a bag of McCain’s Pub-Style Chips open and lay them out evenly on the baking tray.
“That’s the secret. Now you just pop them in a hot oven and we’ll have a cold tin. It’s actually better than going to the pub. No rules at home. Lots of rules at the pub. These things are better than pub chips, anyway.”
After a few minutes, or one can of cold beer, Kasey took our reporter back into the kitchen and told him what he was about to do is a “trade secret” of his.
“There’s people surgeons, tree surgeons and chip surgeons. I think I’m one of the latter. You see how delicate it is to turn them all over one by one? That’s how you get an even bake over them,”
“Honestly, try doing it next time. Leave the air fryer back in 2020 where it belongs.”
More to come.
