As the end of 2019 draws near it brings with it Spotify’s yearly wrap up of what its listeners have been streaming.
Like everyone who listens to music, local woman Jessie Griffiths likes to think she’s a bit of an expert and that her music taste is better than everyone else’s.
But as her most played songs screenshot reveals, Jessie may or may not know there are other artists out there apart from Lizzo.
The Advocate sat down with Jessie to briefly discuss her year in review and to see whether in 2020 she would consider expanding her musical horizons.
“Why would I do that?”
“Lizzo is a queen”
“Also, I do listen to other artists; Bey, Drake, Taylor. Who else would I listen to?”
While a lot of listeners share their most played songs because they think it’s interesting, it’s believed a lot of females in particular take the opportunity to show their Instagram followers that they’re ‘cooler’ than you thought they were.
Spotify says that women tend to take particular pride in the fact that they listen to trap, rap and R&B music, saying that it makes them feel there is more depth to their character.
“Quite often women who listen to those genres of music will share their 2019 wrap-ups with a caption like ‘get you a girl who can do both’, but in actual fact women make up 56% of trap, rap and R&B listeners – so it’s really not that remarkable,” says Spotify music analyst.
More to come.
