Unlike other unlikely Jamaican teams of world sporting events past, the Jamaican Rugby League World Cup side are yet to inspire a classic film.
At the time of writing, the first ever Jamaican national rugby league team, the Reggae Warriors, have lost their first two games after an impressive start to the RLWC where they took out the award for Best Team Name.
With a domestic rugby league competition consisting of only four teams, the Reggae Warriors have found themselves made up of predominantly Super League players and a couple of blokes who used to carve it up on the tracks.
Despite this underdog story, the Reggae Warriors have been unable to sell the film rights to their story as only about 3% of the world has any idea what rugby league is.
“We are performing much better than expected, we’ve even scored a try,” stated Jamaica head coach Romeo Monteith.
“There’s your climactic scene!”
“If we can convey to the audience how impressive successful short kickoffs actually are then we are sorted!”
Although no movie studios are currently in the market to buy a film that isn’t a surefire profit, the Reggae Warriors hope that Disney can see the story as a spiritual successor to Cool Runnings and guilt trip their nostalgic fans into seeing it.
“You can call it Cool Ruckings? Cool Running Kicks? Captains Runnings? I don’t know, someone will figure it out.”
At the time of writing, Jamaica has only one game left against Lebanon who will be referring to as their ‘Arch Rivals’ in order to build a narrative and get these players the recognition/major motion picture they deserve.
