Round 1 of the AFL kicked off in style this weekend with multiple games drawing over 80,000 spectators to the MCG to watch some of the biggest stars in footy battle it out.
The games come on the back of two very recent Ed Sheeran concerts also held at the ground which brought in even bigger crowds. Much of the G’s surface had to be re-laid after the global music phenomenon graced the sporting pitch. And with such a quick turnaround time between events, it appeared the turf was not up to the usual safe footballing standards that players have come to expect to avoid season ending injuries.
Players from both the Tigers v Blues game and the Cats v Pies game struggled to keep their feet throughout their respective matches, with some parts of the ground as firm as rock while other areas were as soft as Sheeran’s rosy white cheeks. More than that, two Geelong players suffered knee injuries that were no doubt caused by the newly laid and unpredictable MCG turf.
Hearing this terrible news, the brilliant song writer reportedly reached out to those injured players in a stunning show of love and respect.
“Dear Fan, thank you for loving my music. Get well soon, Ed.”
These were the words written within the stylish get well soon card that Sheeran’s media manager had sent to those players affected by the poor quality turf.
However just when you thought Ed Sheeran couldn’t get any more lovable, reports confirm that the Halifax heart throb included a signed copy of his highly-anticipated new release album, ‘Subtract’. An album which is not officially available for purchase until May 5, 2023.
