Sydney’s iconic spit bridge will be staying upright for the foreseeable future, until the Northern Beaches outbreak can be contained.

The Spit Bridge, is a girder bridge with a bascule lift span across the Middle Harbour, and connects The A8 from a point called The Spit. The structure marks the beginning of the Northern Beaches as commuters cross from the suburbs of Mosman, on the south bank and enter Seaforth, on the north bank.

However, today, after the bridge was lifted to allow Dick Smith’s yacht out into the Sydney Harbour – operators were told to keep it up.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is urging residents of Sydney’s northern beaches with even the mildest of symptoms to get tested for COVID-19 after two new cases were identified overnight.

The cases bring the total number of new cases announced in the last 24 hours to five – including two others on the northern beaches.

The Queensland acting premier, Steven Miles, has warned the state could reimpose border restrictions if a new coronavirus outbreak in Sydney’s northern beaches was not contained.

Miles told reporters this could mean declaring areas of northern Sydney a Covid “hotspot”, but that would depend on whether authorities in NSW were able to contain the outbreak and determine the origin of cases.

It is for this reason that NSW Roads and Maritime Services have been told to keep that fucking bridge up, so that Christmas isn’t ruined for the rest of Sydney’s residents who have not yet been exposed to the walking dead of Avalon.

This potential for a Northern Beaches lockdown over Christmas is bad news for tourism operators in Noosa and Byron – as the peninsula is well known as the greatest exporter of linen-clad white people in Australia.

Sydney’s Northern Beaches is also home to up 56 different members of the Hopoate family, whose patriarch has made it clear that he does not believe the virus is real.

MORE TO COME.
