Not even 24 hours after Melbourne rapper Ur Boy Bangs announced via Twitter that his upcoming album will be his final musical project, today the world has been made aware of just how spectacular his last hurrah will be.
Speaking the MusicFeeds this morning, Perth-based hypno-rock outfit, Tame Impala have announced that the cult hero will be joining them on their first national tour since 2013.
“We thought, why not make this an all-inclusive tour. We have a really loyal following, and so does [Bangs]” says the band’s lead, Kevin Parker.
“It’s not really about the popularity, although we will benefit from having him on board. We actually are big fans of his music. It is a completely different sound, a very exciting inclusion to both our tour and Australia’s undeground hip hop scene in general”
It is believed Bangs and the Tame Impala boys have been close friends since meeting backstage during their teaser comeback appearance at this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival.
Kevin Parker and his band mates will hit outdoor amphitheatres in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and their native Perth this November – with Bangs expected to play an opening act at each stop.
The band debuted their latest album Currents at this year’s Splendour In The Grass, performing songs like The Moment and The Less I Know The Better on stage for the very first time.
Ur Boys Bangs, a South-Sudanese-Australian musician and entrepreneur has gradually built a following of millions since his iconic debut single “Take You To Da Movies” was released on Youtube in the late 2000’s.
Most recently, he was featured on US television primetime, after talk show host Jimmy Fallon he dissed the bad boy of Australia’s underground for releasing what he calls “one of the worst songs of all time.”
Fallon singled out a rap by Sudanese-born Melbourne-based rapper Bangs, titled Take U To Da Movies, in a segment called “Do Not Play.”
Fallon played a snippet of the track, which went viral in 2009 for all the wrong reasons, before imploring: “Stop, stop stop. That’s terrible.”
The talk show host’s band, US rap crew The Roots, fell about laughing, and said the track was Fallon playing a joke. Within twelve hours, Bangs had returned fire with his hyper-aggressive melodic diss-track “Do Not Watch”.
Bangs has spoken out today about his collaboration with “The hippies from da Perth” – stating he believes this could be one of the most marketable tours in Australian history.
“You have me, I represent da East Coast. I am the most famous musician in da East coast. And Tame Impala is the most famous from da West Coast. Together we are the most popular tour”
Triple j’s Zan Rowe has spoken out this morning about whispers of a potential collaboration album between the two musical institutions.
“I had Kevin [Parker] on here earlier this year, he did mention the working relationship that Tame had struck with Ur Boy Bangs. He didn’t exactly specify, but he definitely did allude to the possibility of a collaboration album,”
“The fact that Bangs has pushed back off his retirement is pretty telling. Something must be up,”
Also joining Tame Impala on all shows will be Mini Mansions, the side-project of Queens of the Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman – Another vocal fan of Ur Boy Bangs.
Fremantle’s Koi Child — a seven-piece hip hop fusion project produced by Kevin Parker — will also join as support in Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
Tickets for all shows go on sale Monday August 31 at 9:00am.
