As the game approaches half time at Stadium Australia, it’s becoming increasing unclear what game is being played on the hallowed turf this evening.
What’s scheduled is the semi final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup between Australia and England but many around the country are wondering if Europe’s appendix has turned up to play a game of high-octane rugby league football.
Adding to the confusion, NRL shaman Gus Gould was spotted trying to gain access to the playing field earlier to give his usual pre-Origin monologue but was stopped by some kind-hearted security guards and shown back to his box seat.
Nevertheless, the unsportspersonlike conduct of the English persons present on the pitch has raised eyebrows.
“They’re going after Sam Kerr like one of those greyhounds from Four Corners going after a possum,” said one local punter in the front bar of the Lord Kidman Hotel in the Old City.
“It’s not on. Look! That one just booted her in the face! What’s going on here?!”
The game continues.
More to come.
