Victorians are today demanding answers from the operators of Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct, after the erection of a statue that no one really called for.

During a press conference with several Melbourne Storm players earlier today, two giant sculptures were unveiled to reveal an icon of Melbourne rugby league, and a creepy sub-character from the Lord Of The Rings movie franchise.

It is not yet known why Melbourne Storm officials thought it was necessary to include a statue of Sméagol alongside the statue of legendary fullback Billy Slater, but fans and local residents are rightly upset.

In fact, not even fans of the iconic Lord Of The Rings films and books are that excited to see this particular character immortalised in Bronze.

More commonly known as Gollum, Sméagol was first written into the triology as a Stoor, one of the three early Hobbit-types. His name was derived from the sound of his disgusting gurgling, choking cough. His life was extended far beyond its natural limits by the effects of possessing the One Ring. He is well known for having a deformed and twisted body and mind – warped by the corruption of the Ring. His chief desire was to possess the Ring that had enslaved him, and he pursued it for many years after Bilbo Baggins found it when they encountered each other in the Misty Mountains during the events of The Hobbit.

Both the Melbourne Storm and the AAMI Park board members are unable to explain how this statue came to be, and it is believed both organisations are growing worried about the weirdos who are already arriving at the Sports and Entertainment precinct to pose for photos with it.

MORE TO COME.
