Once again, local government has proven itself to be pointless outside of collecting rubbish and issuing parking tickets.
Plans by NRL powerhouse Melbourne Storm to move its training base to Albury, ahead of the re-started NSW-based NRL season, suffered a brief setback overnight with the local council voting to be pussies and not take part in the greatest sporting experiment of all time.
Despite three different state governments, the federal government and every medical professional in Australia signing off on the idea of re-starting the NRL by isolating non-NSW-based teams in different rural hubs around the state – 5 bureaucrats from the Albury council have decided they know better.
At a council meeting last night, the culturally-Victorian City Council voted to formally oppose hosting the Victorian team, with vocal opponents from the two-horse border town complaining that it’s not fair that the NRL club should get to use council facilities when locals can’t even go to the pub.
The NRL club has been banned from using any council maintained property during their isolated training camp, in what many are describing as a pro-AFL conspiracy.
However, in true local government fashion, last night’s vote to block the Melbourne Storm from staying in their town has been completely undermined by the actual community, with privately owned hotels jumping at the business opportunity to host the players.
The local footy club, the Albury Tigers, have said it would be an honour to host some of the greatest footballers of the modern era at their club as well.
“Let the boys play” said a spokesperson for the saviour club.
