As the tension escalate between Queenslanders and their neighbours in New South Wales, pubs are gradually filling up on both sides of the border.
It’s a must-win match for both sides in the State Of Origin rugby league series.
Queensland need to win if they want to stay in the fight ahead of game 3.
But if NSW win tonight, they’ll win the series and be one game closer to their first 3-0 whitewash in two decades.
It’s for this reason that neither Blues or Maroons fans are being that friendly with each other this evening. The sledging is a little less harmless, and the frustrations with the refereeing are much more serious.
For Queenslanders, however, there is something worse out there than a cocky blues fan.
It’s worse than ashithouse ref, or a glitching sportsbetting app. It’s even worse than a biased commentator – of which there are many.
It’s the NSW-born Queensland supporters who claim to be one of them.
Sid Wayne-Kerr (30) is one of these blokes. After moving to Betoota several years ago, Sid claims to have always supported the Maroons since he was a young bloke growing up on the Goldie.
However, it was later discovered by his new mates in town that Sid had actually grown up in Coffs Harbour, and only moved to the Gold Coast for his final year of high school. Which just so coincided with the Queensland Maroons eight-in-a-row Origin streak.
This is a major ick for Queenslanders.
“Haha come on your mighty Maroons!” shouts Sid, as the boys arrive at the pub for a few pre-match sharpeners tonight.
“Fuck up Sid” says his legitimate Queenslander mate, Moggy.
“How can you sit there and lie to yourself”
As the boys have explained to Sid during every single Origin match they’ve ever watched together, it is far worse to be a fake Queenslander than a real blue.
“Mate. I hate them. But you’re not allowed to” says another mate, Hanno.
“You’re a traitor to your state of origin. It goes against the whole fucking concept of this entire thing.”
“My enemy’s enemy is not a friend.”
