“There’s too much going on” says North Brisbane diesel mechanic Kerry Cassar (34).
Like every other citizen over the age of 18, Kerry will be asked later this year whether or not he thinks that Aboriginal people should be recognised in the Australian constitution – and whether we should install an office in Canberra for Indigenous people to advise politicians on effective methods for dealing with the extremely concerning statistics surrounding Indigenous literacy, health and incarceration rates.
And like most Australians over the age of 18, Kerry doesn’t know too much about this.
“The only reason I know we are having a referendum is because my mother-in-law loves listening to the ABC afternoon radio with Katherine Feeney” he says.
“You don’t see anything about the Murris in the Courier Mail or Channel 7. Unless they talking about youth crime up North”
However, as Kerry points out. He’s not yet sure of his position on the Indigenous Voice – because he’s got other major decisions to make first.
“It’s 21 weeks in the 2023 NRL season and I’m still not sure if I’m jumping on to the Dolphins” he says.
“We live halfway between the two Brisbane clubs. My kids are BronxBation all the way, but I grew up out in Ipswich, we always just supported the Jets at a QCup level. So yeah… I’ve gotta figure that one out first”
“It’d make sense to support the Broncos during a season like this. Just because they are looking good for a grand final appearance. But that’s a cowardly New South Wales thing to do”
“I also love Wayne Bennett, it’s engrained into me as a Queenslander. I’ve gotta weigh all this up before I make an informed decision. And I’ve gotta do it before we get too far into the finals”
“And when that’s done, I’ll start thinking about how I feel about this referendum”
When asked what he thinks about the fact that 54% of Australians have indicated they will vote No The Voice in recent polls, Kerry says he’d like to know who they are asking this shit.
“They didn’t fucken ask me”
“Half the cunts I know think the Voice is a singing show. The ones that do know about it think it’s a conspiracy to give black people special parking spots at woolies.”
“The only blokes I know actually talking about this shit are the same blokes that thought Bill Gates created the China virus to make us all get jabs”
