Motor Racing Enthusiasts have reacted with frustration after the NSW Government unveiled plans for a track smaller than the existing 10,000 person capacity Parramatta City Raceway which it is designed to replace.

The sudden announcement of the closure of Sydney’s last speedway track was made in late 2019 to the shock of racing fans.

After 44 years of operation, Parramatta Sydney Raceway, also known as Sydney Speedway and Valvoline Raceway, was finally shut down on April 10 as the NSW Government compulsorily purchased the site to redevelop into a light rail marshalling yard. The new speedway will be built as part of Sydney Motorsport Park at Eastern Creek which is conveniently located near nothing.

“I think this is a real win for all the racing car people of NSW” explained NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, posing for photos at the new site.

“While the new venue is slightly smaller than the existing track, it’s a lot more versatile and you can even change the layout of the track to suit different events and store it under the bed when not in use.

Plus, it’s made from recyclable plastic and is designed for use with environmentally responsible electric cars, which the previous dirt track was not. And I’d also like to announce that since it only took 20 minutes to put together, this project has come in on time and almost under budget”.

The assembled journalists were then allowed to ask questions, resulting in multiple clarifications that the track on display was the actual venue, not a model representing a much larger track.
