According to the Queensland State Media, rugby league’s greatest ever coach has reportedly agreed to a multi-year deal with the Dolphins.
This comes hours after the news that the Dolphins had won the bid process to be granted the league’s 17th franchise.
It is being reported that Wayne Bennett has agreed to a three-year deal with the new Redcliffe-based NRL expansion team, beginning from their entry into the competition in 2023.
It is being reported as the worst kept secret in rugby league, but an absolute no-brainer, given Bennett’s ability to win premierships.
This means the 72-year-old Queensland icon now overtakes the British-Australian disco rock outfit The Bee Gees as the biggest deal in North-East Brisbane
The band made up of Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb – are immortalised on the Redcliffe esplanade with a bronze statue that depicts them playing guitars as children.
As anyone from that part of the world will tell you: In August 1958, the famous Gibb family, emigrated to Australia from Manchester and settled in Redcliffe as ten pound poms. The young brothers began performing to raise pocket money at the local Speedway, an past time that arguably launched one of the biggest musical acts in recorded history.
While the Bee Gees only really lived there for a couple years, they remain the region’s biggest claim to fame outside of former Broncos prop Petero Civoniceva.
However that all changed today, after the news broke that Wayne Bennett will be relocating to the Peninsula to begin working the Dolphins from November 1 as they begin to build their facilities, staff, development system and first grade squad.
