Prime Minister Scott Morrison has today addressed the media in an effort to dispel any theories that the Federal government are washing their hands of the issues faced by the Labor Victorian state government.
He has done this by letting everyone know how much of a financial liability Melbourne has become, because they couldn’t contain this virus, that we are all fighting together in one way or other, but mostly in Melbourne.
Morrison said the measures announced over the weekend, combined with previous restrictions in Melbourne would cost between $10 billion and $12 billion, shrinking GDP by about 2.5 per cent.
This announcement comes as salt in the wounds for Victoria, who just can’t seem to get on top of the COVID-19 pandemic, with record-breaking numbers of new cases being announced every couple of day.
This is bad news for both the Victorian people and their government, on top of the fact that the Melbourne has been plunged into stage 4 restrictions, which severely limit people’s movements and how businesses are allowed to operate.
Morrison says of the newly announced economic cost of $10 billion to the economy of the next couple of weeks, 80 per cent, or $6 billion to $7 billion, is expected to come directly from affected industries and businesses in Victoria, while the rest will be due to broader supply-chain effects and impacts on national confidence.
However, he also made a point of reiterating that the long-suffering people of Victoria are not alone in the fight against this horrible public health emergency.
“Make no mistake” he said.
