In scenes reminiscent of the recent LIV Golf championships, the people of South Australia are really quite fired up about winning the state cricket championships over the weekend.

Adelaide has reaffirmed it’s newfound titled as the Australian sports and party capital, after thousands rushed the field to celebrate capturing the Sheffield Shield for the first time since 1995/96.

In fact, things looked very 1990s over the weekend in Adelaide.

It was with a four-wicket win over Queensland that South Australia sealed the final. With Jason Sangha’s unbeaten 126 and Alex Carey’s calm and collected 105, the free settlers finished 6-270 on day four of the decider in Adelaide.

The South Australians now hold the Shield and the one-day trophy in the same season for the first time, and can also boast the highest successful run chase in a state final, a record previously set by Victoria’s 2-239 against NSW in 1990/91.

And like they did 29 years ago, South Australians are spraying champagne and partying all night long.

The wild scenes at Karen Rolton oval transported the rest of the nation back to the mid-1990s when the Sheffield Shield reigned supreme as the most dominant sporting competition in the early months of the calendar year.

Judging by the hysterical celebrations from fans, one could be forgiven for thinking that Australia only has three TV channels and no access to internet. It’s almost as if the IPL and Big Bash were never invented.

The South Australian Spiders are Australia’s answer to the Jordan-era Chicage Bulls. They the champions of the word right now, and the people of Adelaide are treating them as such.

It is not yet certain whether these celebrations are a uniquely South Australian response to winning a national sporting competition, or if the Sheffield Shield is actually back!

UP THE SPIDERS!
