Laura Melphy’s disappointment is palpable this afternoon, after reluctantly accepting that her mortal boyfriend cannot, and will not, ever possess the chiselled jaw line, molten eyes, fanged canines, or membranous wings that make the heartthrobs in her young adult smut so unexpectedly arousing.
Taking a brief break from her fictional realm, a despondent Melphy lay on the couch clutching A Court of Wings and Ruin, the third book in the best selling A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) series.
“Look at him…” she said to our reporter, referring to her boyfriend, Sam, who was minding his own business and actually vacuuming their apartment.
“He’s so… human. Boring. White bread. There’s no aura. I am not pulled to him by some invisible tether, he can’t read my mind. He can’t fly. I just don’t even know what we are doing together anymore.”
Melphy, like many other ACOTAR readers, has become swept up in the romantasy genre and have started preferring to spend their time in the fictional worlds created in these steamy smut novels.
And it’s easy to see why; faeries, dragons, other magical creatures, and heartthrobs with ‘members’ so girthy you can barely hold it with both hands.
Romantasy is the subgenre of fantasy that combines elements of romance and fantasy, where the romantic relationship is a central plotline and often drives the narrative. It’s one of the fastest growing genres and proof that the wives and girlfriends of the world are way hornier than anyone could have predicted.
When asked how he feels about his girlfriend’s perhaps more than novel crush on these fictional characters, Sam rolled his eyes.
“Mate. It’s fucked.. She just sits there grinning at her book all night. I read a bit from one of the books once and it was actually the dumbest thing I have ever read…”
“Laura and her friends have this group chat where they just talk about how hot these dudes are and how shit we are. Like, sorry I am not the most powerful magic dark lord ever to exist, but that is impossible because I am real and he is fiction.”
“I guess the silver lining is that her hall pass is a fictional fairy, so at least I never have to come good on that.”
More to come.
