While still in the depths of winter, the sun is actually doing wonders right now.

It may be technically still bloody cold, but, for a short and sweet moment this afternoon – the sun is absolutely delightful.

Offering an old-fashioned ‘warmth’ as opposed to the it’s stereotypical summer sting, Australia’s winter sun is severely underrated.

In fact, it’s just gorgeous.

That’s according to millions of mums and grandmas across the country, who are always the first to make such an observation.

Another word to describe this phenonmena is ‘Apricity’ – which describes the golden feeling that comes as a rare treat when every other meteorological metric points to cold winter winds and frost. It comes from the Latin word “apricus,” which means “being warmed by the sun”.

While the sun’s daily window of gorgeousness is only brief, before vanishing under the disheartening arrival of a gloomy and cold afternoon, it’s mere presence suggests that every day after today is only getting a little bit warmer and sunnier.

With the winter solstice nearly a month behind us, the weekend’s forecast is predicting another good dose of apricity right across Australia – except for Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart, unfortunately.
