A league historically famous for not caring about its players has this weekend bemused its fans.
The National Rugby League called things to a standstill yesterday afternoon, after a few bits of crash bang caused a kerfuffle out at Homebush.
A few years after finally decided it’s not a great idea to let players run as fast as they can and contact another player with their shoulder, the NRL suspended the game in the 31st minute for a fair chunk of time.
Citing concerns around player welfare, the teams rushed into the dressing rooms while 23,000 fans got treated to the light show.
Visible lightning and thunder followed before the storm front passed without further issue, play recommencing after a 28-minute hiatus.
“Yeah that was really scary,” said an NRL spokesperson who spent the majority of the storm underneath his bed whimpering with his tail between his legs.
“That was really loud and really bright.”
“Player safety is paramount for us, so we just couldn’t risk it.”
Player resumed after half an hour and the Bulldogs limped to a win over the Bunnies who have forgotten how to play attacking footy.
More to come.
