The Crisafulli Government has called an emergency cabinet meeting today, after being alerted to a catastrophic calendar clash that may get in the way of billions of dollars worth of infrastructural development.
It seems that the Brisbane Olympics are set to clash with Brisbane’s annual Royal Queensland Exhibition, also known as ‘The Ekka’.
The Queensland Premier was alerted to this oversight by the staunch community leaders in the Country Women’s Association, also known as the CWA, who are renowned for their Ekka baking prizes.
As it stands, the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2032, and the Paralympic Games will take place from August 24 to September 5, 2032.
With the Ekka taking place every year in the first two weeks of August, there is set to be at least one week cross-over between these two, equally important, events.
Crisafulli says he understands the place the Ekka holds in the hearts of Queenslanders, and also recognises that unlike the Olympics, it is an event that is also somewhat relevant to rural people.
“We know Queenslanders love sport” said the Premier.
“But they prefer domestic football codes and crickets. Track and field has always been a bit how ya going. And swimming. I mean, unless it’s in the surf… It’s also a bit suss”
“Obviously we were excited for all of the global attention, but that should not take away from our beloved Ekka”
Much like the Easter Show in Sydney, or the Melbourne Royal Show, The Ekka is wildly popular with local families. Providing city kids with the opportunities to witness the best of the best in the state’s agriculture, with bull prizes, wood-chopping competitions, and stalls of cute farm animals.
On top of this, it also has rollercoasters, dagwood dogs, and showbags.
In the eyes of many Queenslanders, this annual exhibition is far more important than seeing the very best in global athleticism.
David Crisafulli says his government apologises wholeheartedly for the unforgivable clash of dates, and says his government are just as concerned as the general public about the logistics surrounding two major events attempting to both utilise inner-city venues.
“We are having crisis talks at the moment. The Olympics are going to have to be delayed a month or two. That would make sense, because they are meant to be the Summer games”
“If the IOC don’t want to accomodate our terms, then they can bugger off. No international sporting event is more important than our strawberry ice creams”
