After having his entire self-identity shattered on election night, a lost Peter Dutton has resorted to a 6 week Muay Thai retreat in Phuket.
Liberal Party insiders say this is exactly what their ousted former leader needs to find himself.
Like many Australian men, Thailand has been seen as an oasis for those that have just had a shocking 6 months, Dutton hopes that the trip will be the perfect way for him to reinvent himself.
The 54 year-old has been reportedly delighted to meet other Australian men who were enduring pivotal moments in their lives – from divorcees to corporate high flyers that have just pulled the pin on their soul-sucking careers.
Tiger Muay Thai, a world renowned Muay Thai gym for westerners, say they are more than happy to provide Dutton with the space he needs to find his groove again.
Somchai Chaiyaphum (33), one of the head instructors at Tiger Muay Thai, says Dutton has adapted quickly to the regime.
“He has great focus, he keeps his head down and hits the pads, he doesn’t talk much, only grunting with each kick”
“It is clear he has some demons he would like to defeat while he is here” Somchai explained.
But it’s not just the kickboxing, Dutton is also immersing himself in the many different functional fitness boot camps that Phuket has to offer.
While Dutton did give a stoic nod to Australian reporters, he refused to comment or even engage with any cameras – instead spending his breaktime sitting cross legged with a few other westerners in a corner listening to the wise words of an older Muay Thai veteran.
Observers say Dutton has taken a particular interest in bodyweights, which he described as “surprisingly therapeutic.”
One witness claimed they overheard him muttering “it’s all just footwork and timing, just like Parliament” after a particularly sweaty sparring session.
Despite the intensity of the regime, Dutton is reportedly sleeping better and has started journaling, hitting cold plunges and going on morning runs with no music.
