A woman who’s never wanted kids has come to a sobering realisation this week: her once supportive parents might not actually support her life choices at all – especially now that her sister is expecting baby number three.
Claire Linetti, 33, says she’d always had a close relationship with her parents up until seven years ago, when her older sister Dana announced her first pregnancy.
It was then that the phone calls became few and far between, peppered only with updates about her niece and nephew.
But what was worse for Claire, was realising how much she was getting left behind.
“They just…gradually became less interested in what was going on in my life, and now, it feels like they barely listen when I speak”, says Claire, “and they don’t include me in anything anymore. I’m always the last to know when something major has happened.”
“And then it’s like ‘by the way, dad was in hospital last week!’ or ‘oh we just bought Dana a brand new SUV.”
“Mind you, she and her hubby already own three cars.”
Now, with baby number three on the way, Claire says she feels as though she’s become somewhat of an afterthought.
“I always expected to take a backseat when grandkids entered the picture, I’m not dirty about that.”
“But when I’m talking about something major in my life, it’d be nice to be met with some interest, you know?”
More to come.
