The rare victory at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium appears to have gone straight to the heads of both the NSW Blues squad and their supporters.
It would seem that the Queensland forwards were out-muscled in the first match of the 2025 Origin series, with coach Billy Slater fronting a press conference to insist that his side does not have a ‘personnel issue’ after their disappointing 18-6 loss.
Last night’s match has compounded the slump that Queensland faced in the 2024 series, with Slater’s side now having lost three Origin games in a row, and two on the trot at Suncorp Stadium for the first time in 27 years.
As was expected, the entire Sydney-based rugby league media class are now declaring that NSW are ushering in a unbeatable new era of Origin footballers.
NSW cannot lose.
And Billy Slater is telling them that he will not be changing his team. He says the result has nothing to do with the individuals. It was just a matter of their inability to be the better team on the night.
The team that just lost. It’s going to stay the same. Which means the Blues don’t have to do anything differently. They can just expect the same thing to happen when they face each other again for the second match of the 2025 State Of Origin.
The Blues are enjoying this foreign feeling of euphoria. They are relishing their newfound status as the best.
Nothing is going to change. Queensland are going to be exactly the same the next time they play eachother.
The Maroons tried their very hardest last night and it wasn’t enough to beat the Blues. They couldn’t try any harder than they did – and they can’t possibly be any more motivated to win. Next time will be exactly the same.
It’s written.
The Blues can just roll out of bed on the 18th of June and give the same performance they gave last night. That’s all they need to do.
Billy Slater basically admitted that.
