In a cruel taste of fate, a millennial woman who was the first female in her family to have a full time job will also be the first person in her family to lose her job to artificial intelligence, as programs such as ChatGPT and Google Veo are set to decimate the creative industries.

As someone who’s spent the past decade working in graphic design, Evelyn da Silva, 32, admits she’s aware that she’s ‘well and truly fucked’, and estimates that she roughly has two years to find something else to pivot into before she’s out on her arse.

But as someone who’s always been a creative, Evelyn says she can’t exactly see herself pivoting to the trades or any other physical labour job that will be safe – for now, anyway.

“It’s pretty fucked how AI has created just as woman has started making up 50% of the workforce”, says Evelyn, with a defeated sigh, “it’s coming for us all, but customer service, arts and marketing and communications are on the frontline.”

“Which are pretty much all industries dominated by women.”

Evelyn admits she keeps trying to keep her head in the sand, but at some point she knows she’s going to have to come up with a game plan.

“I’m genuinely terrified. I don’t think the world is prepared for what AI is going to do to the job market – and no, I don’t believe it’s the same as the industrial revolution, or the creation of the internet.”

“I think it’s going to be far, far worse.”

“As for all those people who say, ‘well just pivot industries’ – like, okay, are we all expected to just completely change our careers? Won’t that just make the job market even more competitive?”

“Oh god, am I going to have to become a barista again?”

More to come.
