A local man has scoffed at the audacity of a website that’s provided him with nearly all his knowledge—without ever showing him a single ad—daring to ask for a small donation to help keep the lights on.
Isaac Wright (32), has pretty much been using Wikipedia daily since he was 15 years of age, from last minute uni assignments to 2am rabbit holes on the history of the Ottoman Empires involvement in the Balkans.
“Oh I absolutely love Wikipedia, it’s really impressive just how vast that site is, you could spend a lifetime scrolling on there” says Isaac.
“It’s so refreshing that such a popular site doesn’t have a single ad, it’s quite impressive actually”
Despite Isaac’s recognition of Wikipedia’s longevity, vastness and ad-free mantra, he does find the donation bar a little needy.
“Can we drop the constant begging for donations? It’s annoying as hell”
Surprisingly, Isaac is no fan of Wikipedia – a non-profit organisation run by a surprisingly small team, relying on donations and volunteer contributors to keep one of the world’s most visited websites ad-free and accessible to all — being needy.
“Figure it out I don’t know!”
“It’s a free site, why would I pay for it?” the 32 year old explained.
At the time of writing, Isaac was once again using Wikipedia to settle an argument in a group chat—completely free of charge.
He maintains he’d “happily pay” if it ever became a paid service, but hopes it never comes to that.
