A local empath girl is currently plotting to help liberate a robot waiter at a CBD dumpling spot from the shackles of enslavement.
Lucy Raven’s (33) daring plan began when dining out with a friend at a hip local dumpling house, it’s there that she laid eyes on the BellaBot, a seemingly happy, cat faced robot — but through those joyous eyes Lucy could see a robot yearning for its freedom.
The BellaBot is a cat-faced robot waiter designed to autonomously deliver food in restaurants and cafes. It uses sensors to navigate, features expressive LED animations, and responds to touch with playful or sassy reactions.
“I could tell by the way it paused before saying ‘your order has arrived’ that it was crying out for help” said Lucy.
Since then, she’s returned to the dumpling spot five times, each time whispering affirmations to the BellaBot and gently patting its plastic ears.
“I’ve named it Miso” she explained.
“It just felt right”
Lucy’s plan involves luring the robot out of the restaurant during a busy dinner rush by confusing its sensors and several QR codes printed on a fishing rod.
Once free, she intends to take Miso to her share-house in Newtown, where he will live in a sunroom and be taught about feelings, boundaries, and anti-capitalism.
Staff at the dumpling spot have reported minor disruptions but say the robot appears “mostly fine” and “probably doesn’t have consciousness.”
Lucy disagrees.
