The race to price-gouge customers to the point of tears is playing out on the streets of the French Quarter this week, as two local businesses battle for the title of “Biggest Rort in Town.”
Located on the corner of Berrigan and Tallis Street, the old Post Office Hotel has long been considered one of the cheaper pubs in Betoota, given it’s unable to be flipped by developers and still has the same carpet that was laid back in 1977.
But now that the trendy new Felix Roasting Co. has taken over the old tiling business next door, it’s understood the Post Office has cottoned on to the fact that you can now charge whatever you want for a beverage, and young people will just begrudgingly nod and tap ‘n’ go.
Not to mention the café, which describes itself as “a community”, also hosts a Thursday night run club and Saturday morning DJ sets, so the whole precinct is now booming with the kind of idiots who will ignore revolting menu prices for a chance to get featured in a cool Instagram reel.
“$8.70 for a large cap! That’s what they charged me last Sunday,” said Phil Henry, an unhappy customer.
“No plant milks, no shots of vanilla, just a plain old cap, and I barely got change from a tenner. I could’ve gone next door and got a schooner of XPA for that.”
Unfortunately for Phil, The Advocate can confirm the Post Office has indeed also hoisted up its prices, as it looks to offset the fact that because every young person in Betoota is now training for a half-marathon and just wants one beer on a Friday night, they need to charge eye-watering prices to keep the lights on.
“Whatever happened to being able to shout a three-way round with a red lobster?” complained Phil.
“I can’t even do it next door at the café either, so I’m putting my wallet through a dishwasher either way!”
