In some truly shocking news that no one ever expected to read, allegations have emerged that Kmart might not be ethically sourcing some of the things they sell.
This comes after legal action was launched against the retailer by a group who believe that some of the companies products come from factories linked to forced labour in China.
Kmart has strongly denied the claims, but the group leading the court action, Australian Uyghur Tangritagh Women’s Association (AUTWA), has demanded that the retailer prove where it gets its shit from.
While Kmart claims on it’s website that it’s all good to go, allegations have emerged that they source stuff from the Xinjiang region which is the Uyghur homeland in Western China.
While the United States and plenty of European nations have banned imports from the Xinjiang region, Australia has not.
“Yeah, what the hell,” said one local Australian today.
“You are telling me the shop where I can purchase an item of clothing for less than a regular cappuccino at my local cafe, might not be ethically and sustainably producing or sourcing some of their inventory.”
“That’s crazy.”
“I would have thought it would be pretty easy to grow the cotton, manufacture the chemicals and garment dyes, pay someone to make the item of clothing, pay someone to ship it across the world and then pay someone to put it on shelves (with a bunch of logistics on the way) -for a few dollars.”
“That’s blown me away that has.”
“Might have to think twice about purchasing some single use item of clothing.”
More to come.
