The cost of living crisis is on full display at the Sydney Royal Easter Show as many showgoers noticed that the once humble Bertie Beetle show bag stall is now offering an AfterPay option.
Bertie Beetle has defended the decision by claiming it’s a chance for Aussies doing it tough to not miss out on the iconic Easter Show staple.
“We know many Australians are doing it tough this Easter, which is why we’ve decided to offer our Bertie Beetle show bags in just three payment instalments with some interest on top” said one spokesperson for the brand, who also confirmed that Centrelink recipients will not receive a discount.
The show bag offers three 10 gram Bertie Beetle bars, an assortment of other random chocolate bars with no relation to Bertie Beetle, and a payment plan printout for buyers to stick on their fridge when they get home.
“Gone are the days of chucking a gold coin at the stall and walking off with a bag,” said one nostalgic father, tearing up while checking his credit score on his phone.
Analysts have described the move as a “bold new era” for low-income debt.
Financial experts are now warning parents to read the fine print, as missing a payment could see the Bertie Beetle debt handed over to collections by Christmas.
Meanwhile, children continue to point at the stall in delight, completely unaware they’ve just committed their family to a 19.6% interest loan
